In 2002, Dave Johnston had to ask his ISP (BT) to “blackhole” his primary personal email address (dv@btinternet.com) after increasingly sophisticated email worms flooded his inbox and threatened closure of the broadband account. The article describes how worms evolved to harvest addresses from local files and evade filtering, eventually making the mailbox unusable and even causing spoof-related bouncebacks.
