An arXiv study reports an empirical evaluation of Pearl’s cuPOW proof-of-useful-work, concluding that despite a 24 EH/s network (around 320,000 GPU-equivalents), the deployed system produced zero useful AI inference, while mining incentives displaced legitimate research workloads and rose in GPU utilization after the software’s release.
